As part of activities to mark the Jubilee Year, 2025, Priests and Religious of Donkorkrom Apostolic Vicariate, in the Kwahu Afram Plains, Eastern Region of Ghana, have visited the inmates of Forifori  Camp Prison.

They were joined in the May 13, 2025, Prison visitation by the Parishioners of St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Forifori.

Rev. Fr. Solomon Gbeglo Amerdorme, Assisting Priest at the St. Cecilia Parish, disclosed the purpose of the visit to the Prison, scheduled by the Most Rev. John Alphonse Asiedu, SVD, Bishop of the Vicariate together with the Priests and Religious as one “to fulfil our social and religious responsibility by sharing with the needy”.

“On this joyful day, we are here to show our care, our love, our concern for this noble institution, that life may be preserved and maintained,” he reiterated.

A donation of fridge was made to the Prison, as a response to a special appeal for a fridge for storing medicine for the inmates, made by the Prison officials to the Catholic Church of Afram Plains, through Rev. Fr. Formedza John Felix Awaitey Jnr., former Parish Priest of St. Cecilia Parish, Forifori, during his Ash Wednesday visit to the prison on March 5, 2025.

The acquisition of the fridge, Fr. Gbeglo underscored, was made possible through the contributions by the Priests, Religious of the Vicariate, and the Bishop, as their widow’s mite to “save, preserve and maintain life”.

Mr. Jonathan Nii Commey, Chief Superintendent of the Camp, Officer in-Charge and District Prison’s Commander, in a welcome address, expressed joy for the visit, which he considered a privilege.

He said, “It is not easy for people to visit us…, but for you to walk here freely to come and spend some time with us, we say it is a privilege,” he acknowledged.

He thanked the Priests and Religious for the gift of a fridge, which he said, “will go a very long way” and assured them the fridge be used for its intended purpose.

The Very Rev. Fr. Leopold, Ettuh, Chancellor of the Vicariate, representing the Bishop, extended his prayerful wishes and assured that an appeal would be made to people to also support the prisons.

Among the Priests at the Camp Prison were Rev. Fr. Bernard Adjei Appiah, SVD, Administrator of St. Francis Xavier Cathedral, Donkorkrom, Rev. Fr. Michael Awuah-Ansah, Chaplain of St. Fidelis Senior High Technical School, Tease, and Rev. Fr. Philip Desmond Gyapong, Parish Priest of St. Cecilia Parish Forifori.

The Forifori  Camp Prison is a place for “low-risk prisoners,” who are serving the final years of their prison terms, having been transferred from either Koforidua or Nsawam wall Prisons.

Its main purpose is to decongest the other two prisons, also serves as a place where the inmates are helped to learn skills that could help them to reintegrate better into the society, once they are out, and this will help reduce chances of them returning to prison, because they must have had something to keep them busy.
